Dietitian on Wheels® is a traveling dietitian consultant group serving Health Care Facilities, Individuals and Communities needing nutrition help.
Founder & President, Jennifer M. Wood, MS, CSG, RD, is a Board Certified Specialist in Gerontological Nutrition Services. Wood began her career in the gourmet food industry having founded Jenny’s Country Kitchen, Inc., which she grew from a cottage industry to over 2+million in sales. After returning to school, Wood went on to get her graduate degree in interdepartmental nutrition and food science. She then completed a dietetic internship and become a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN).
Wood went on to manage a prominent community nutrition program in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The program was partially funded by President Obama’s Communities Putting Prevention to Work Grants. It was during her collaborative work between Gundersen Health System, the La Crosse County Health Department and Local food Businesses that Wood realized companies sometimes needed temporary or part-time food and nutrition consulting services rather than a full-time registered dietitian or Dietician. Because of this, Wood went on to fulfill this need through Dietitian on Wheels®, a traveling dietitian consultant service.
Dietitian on Wheels Success Stories
Chelsea Area Welness Project
Chelsea Area Wellness Initiative hired Dietitian on Wheels,® as a traveling dietitian consultant, to promote their Michigan 5 healthy towns wellness initiative. During our community-wide presentation, we encouraged food retailers to take advantage of individual dietitian business consultations. During our consultations, we encourage food retailers to launch their own healthy food programs. When they participated, their programs were were then funded, marketed and promoted within their communities. This resulted in some area grocery stores hiring dietitians to promote healthier foods to their customers. Additionally, local corner stores brought in more fresh fruits and vegetables for their local communities.
Our Convenience Store Work at Kwik Trip, Inc.
Dietitian on Wheels® provided traveling dietitian consulting services to Kwik Trip, Inc., a chain of 400+ Wisconsin-based convenience stores. During our work, we helped develop the Eat Smart Menu Guide, promoted a healthier concession program, and started their collaborative work with the Partnership for a Healthier America. We went on to promote their healthy eating programs within community collaboratives such as; The La Crosse County Healthy Living Collaboration, Live Well Winona, Making it Better Olmsted County, and Dodge Refreshed. This resulted in Dietitian on Wheels® being part of Leadership Teams in Freeborn, Rice, Mower, Faribault and Martin Counties in MN. Our success also resulted in Kwik Trip hiring a full-time registered dietitian as part of their product development team.
Faribault, Martin and Watonwon Counties
Faribault, Martin and Watonwon County Health Department in Minnesota hired Dietitian on Wheels® to provide traveling dietitian consultant services to restaurants and food retailers as part of their Statewide Health Improvement funding. Here, we collaborated with restaurant owners and food retailers to promote the healthier food options as part of the Eat Well! menu initiative, and Eat Well! Healthier Cornerstore Initiative, increasing their bottom line while improving the health of their communities.
A Nutritious Dish…in a matter of minutes!
A Nutritious Dish…in a matter of minutes!™ was a highly successful collaborative educational cooking series between HGTV in Winona, MN, Winona Volunteer Services and Dietitian on Wheels.® During this series, we taught area residents how to choose, store and prepare a nutritious seasonal fruit or vegetable each week. This was then part of the local TV news line-up, reaching even more people in the community. Recipes videos were then used and distributed by Channel One Regional Food Bank and other food banks across Minnesota to encourage food shelf recipients to eat more fruits and vegetables.
Dietetic Internship Opportunities:
Dietitian on Wheels® is a regular preceptor for top-notch dietetic interns from Viterbo University in La Crosse, WI and other U.S. Dietetic programs. We help the next generation of registered dietitian nutritionists become successful. Our dietetic interns work with community health agencies, senior nutrition programs, local food retailers and in nursing homes. Some successful real world projects our interns have worked on are: What’s for Dinner Tonight? at Rushford Foods in Rushford, MN, nutrition projects for Channel One Regional Food Bank and SEMCAC senior congregate dining services. They have also worked on projects for large C-stores, like Kwik Trip, Inc. in La Crosse, WI.
